CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES

Research is necessary to develop the knowledge in areas where clinical decision-making is difficult, because of the lack of data; research studies bring access to the latest in cardiac care. Involvement in research gives CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES the opportunity to help advance the knowledge of medical science.

While enrolled in a clinical trial, patients continue under the clinical care of their primary care physician and primary cardiologist at CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES and will be seen by the clinical research coordinator as needed for protocol related care. The communication is maintained between the primary care physician, cardiologist, and the patient. The clinical cardiac research experience at CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES has been one that has been met with great success. The physicians of CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES have served as lead investigators, and co-investigators on a number of trials.

One of the strengths of our approach to clinical research is that the patient always comes first. Participation in the clinical research trial helps enhance the clinical care of the patient. The continued participation in clinical research will bring exciting cutting edge research with cardiovascular advancement in mind.

The following is a summary of some of the clinical research trials that the physicians of CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES have participated in as principle investigators or co-principle investigators:

Completed Studies

MUSTT (Multicenter Unsustained Tachycardia Trial)- This multicenter NIH funded trial studied markers for the prediction of sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary disease

AVID (Amiodarone vs. Implantable Defibrillators)- This NIH funded multicenter trial analyzed therapy for patients with cardiac arrest. This trial has been completed, and has led to a New England Journal of Medicine publication. Results show that implantable defibrillators were associated with a more favorable outcome when compared to Amiodarone therapy in these patients.

Bidisomide for Atrial Fibrillation- This study looked at the use of the drug Bidisomide in treatment of patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Dofetilide for Atrial Fibrillation- This study analyzed the effects of Dofetilide used in patients with atrial fibrillation. (Done jointly with Regional Clinical Research)

Dofetilide in Patients with and ICD- This project examined the benefits of the use of Dofetilide in patients with and ICD to suppress ventricular arrhythmias. (Done jointly with Regional Clinical Research).

Thera VDD Pacemaker- This was a trial investigating the utility of a single lead dual chambered pacemaker. This has led to market release of this device.

ICD Lead 6932- This was a trial to investigate the use of a tined ICD lead in patients with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. This has led to market release of this device.

PURSUIT- This trial studied the use of a new anti-platelet drug in the therapy of patients with acute coronary syndromes and has shown significant benefits when compared with conventional therapy.

Azimilide in patients with an ICD- This project examined the benefits of the use of Azimilide in patients with and ICD to suppress ventricular arrhythmias.

MOST- This was a NIH funded trial to analyze the most appropriate pacing mode in patients with sick sinus node syndrome. Patients with sick sinus syndrome are implanted with DDDR pacemaker and randomized to single chamber or dual chamber pacing modes

GUSTO I, IIb and IV - These trials of the acute treatment of patients with myocardial infarction using a variety of treatments including thrombolytic therapy and PTCA
