| Transesophageal Echocardiography
The echocardiogram can be of great help in the evaluation of the heart. Sometimes the images of the heart are limited by the air in the lungs or by the size of the chest and the information needed can not be obtained. In transesophageal echo a small probe is swallowed and echo pictures of the heart are obtained from the esophagus. This test is done under light sedation and you will feel sleepy throughout it. It is very helpful in evaluating the heart valves or an artificial heart valve. The test may take up to an hour and your doctor will have results latter that day.
