A new treatment for angina pectoris, known as EECP®, has become
available at CARDIOLOGY ASSOCIATES. EECP® is also known as Enhanced extracorporial counterpulsation. This treatment is performed as an outpatient. The patient lies on a special bed and straps holding compression supports around the legs and lower body. These inflate with each heart beat and help to augment blood flow. Each treatment takes about one hour and is painless and non-invasive. A total of thirty-five treatments are necessary.

Research has shown that EECP® treatment helps new blood vessels (collateral vessels) to develop in the heart and thus improve chest pain from angina pectoris. EECP® is used as a compliment to medical therapy, angioplasty and bypass surgery or when the latter two can not be performed. Studies and our experience have shown that about 70% of patient have an improvement in their angina after a full course of EECP®. As yet no serious adverse effects have been identified.
